‘One of the oldest shops in scarborough’
The present owner Kevin Lukey was born in 1948 coincidently the same year his parents bought the property where Scarborough Cellars now is. Kevin’s parents operated a mixed business with a Gallon Licence on the property in the 1950’s and early 1960’s.
A Gallon Licence was a strict law that allowed the sale of a gallon of liquor. One gallon was the equivalent of 6 x 750ml bottles of liquor.
The mixed business was at 166 Scarborough Road (known as Scarborough Beach Road) the only sealed road in the Scarborough district, this is believed to be one of the oldest shops in Scarborough.
In 1957, FREECORNS a supermarket chain rented the premises and conducted a grocery store with a bottle shop attached. They became insolvent in the mid 1970’s and the family led by Kevin had a legal battle to retain the liquor licence.
In 1977, Kevin opened the bottle shop on the original site as ‘Scarborough Liquor Centre’ paying due respect to the history of the site. It was changed during the 1990’s to ‘Scarborough Cellars’ for simplicity.
Since then we have added a Cellar for maturing wine and a Tap Room for craft beer lovers.
